For years, Wikipedia has been a seemingly unshakable pillar of the free and open internet—a collaborative, non-profit beacon of knowledge. Wikipedia’s entire ecosystem is built on a delicate balance of copyright principles. These are thorny questions that Wikipedia’s community-driven model is now forced to confront.

Finally, the very concept of “fair use” is under constant pressure. Fair use is not a universal right but a legal defense, one that often requires a costly court battle to prove. For a volunteer-driven project, facing down a multi-billion dollar media corporation over the use of a single image or a short clip is a daunting prospect. Wikipedia has weathered storms before, from internal edit wars to external misinformation campaigns. But this is different.
